.. Customer Service Standards ..
As I aged, I realised that my expectation of quality customer service is getting higher, as in I really expected more, and really much MORE. I get "irritated" easily when I encounter very poor customer service.
Have I actually become very impatient? If so, I really need to change...
My recent experience with Kaplan was a classic one. That one, needless to say, is really beyond any "sane" person's imagination. Thank God I got my transcripts and certificate from them, so I am just so glad that I never have to deal with them ever again.
Recently I encountered 2 cases with Citibank, which got me really irritated with the kind of service standards they are providing. Maybe it is because I came from there, so naturally my expectation is higher? As in, I know how the company works, what are their service values. So it got me really frustrated when the staffs gave me very lacklustre replies. As in, you know that they just want to get their job "done and over with". This kind of attitude that lacks passion, really heated me!
My conviction is this. Whatever we do, do it with a spirit of excellence. Have passion. Have zeal. Don't give a sub-standard kind of performance that just "pissed" people off. As human become more sophisticated, they are not contended with just the "standard answer" that comes with the situation. Anyone can give that answer! But they are looking at how you can actually "WOW" them with the way you handle that situation.
It is really like, we don't say, nah, the problem is this, so, too bad. But rather, we should go, hmmm. the problem is this. why not like this... if this doesn't work, we can do this! Offer solutions! Be problem-solvers!
I actually really quite enjoy working at Kim Wang Supermarket, though just as a cashier now, a rather "lowly" position. Haha... But, I just enjoy serving people, helping them with their groceries. Greeting them. Packing the stuff for them, making sure they are ok. They can carry the things without much difficulty.
But the problem is, this Supermarket is really very low customer-service oriented. Perhaps it is just a family business, so they don't really care much, especially 2 of the family members. They are the only ones who are making this place a rather miserable-working place. Anyway, this low customer-service environment does affect me. Especially when it comes to -- checking the customer's trolleys and bags. South Australia started the ban of plastic bags, so the people have to carry their own shopping bags when they do their groceries shopping. This has actually caused quite a number of problems, especially thefts, as the people just put the things in their bags, paid for a few items, and left without paying the rest of the items.
Initially I really felt uneasy to check the bags, as I felt it is so rude! It is like placing judgment on the people, and some sort of racism? But there was really an incident that happened 2 weeks ago when this student from this particular University attempted to walk off with a trolley full of unpaid groceries (about A$90++), and paying just a few cheap items. The student claimed that the items were purchased, but could not produce the receipt. The boss asked the student to leave the trolley behind and fetch the receipt to "claim" these items. The student never return.
When Janice told me this incident, I told myself that, as their "staff", I should do my part well. So I started doing random checking on people's bags and trolleys. So far, there were 2 incidents when the persons I checked, the girl looked at me, as if I was racist against her. Sigh... Of course, she did not steal anything. And just today! This lady let me checked her bag, and then told me, not everyone from mainland China is a thief. I was a little taken aback, but quickly explained to her that checking bags is a "routine" that we have to do. Not because she is from China that's why I check on her......
I just really "hate" these kind of feelings lah. I am not racist nor judgmental.....
But I still maintain my conviction in having a sense of common sense, as in, not all bags need to be checked! You will know that whether the person who is paying is attempting to steal or not, right?!! Just today again, this Aussie couple were making payment for a few items. And the boss' daughter, the nasty one, signaled me to check the Aussie lady's handbag. I looked at her, stunned. I thought, Come on! The handbag is so small, what can she put inside?? And you look at them, you will KNOW that they will NEVER steal! So, I refused to check her bag!
I think she actually "complained" about me to her sister, Vanessa, who is really the best person we had met in this supermarket. She was speaking in Vietnamese, so I knew she must be talking bad about any of us. She always does that. Haha. But, anyway I think Vanessa don't really take her comments to heart, because I know if it were her, she would not check that bag too.
I dun know if God is using this supermarket to mold me, but I am definitely molded!! My patience, my tolerance, my love for people... especially those who are really just not so likable, just so nasty to you???!! Haha....
Anyway, my main point of this blog is this. I think I sure have a zeal and a passion for customer service. I really realised that today. So maybe, that should be the line for me to go when I complete my degree? :)
Well well. We shall see how.
Ah Wen is going to be a Zone Supervisor-in-training! I am really so happy for her, and so proud of her! I know she will do a good job.... because she has the HEART for people! :)
I used to have such a burning passion to go into full-time pastoral ministry, that was in 2002, but, I never get to have that kind of opportunity. Then, the desire fades over time... and after the message on cultural mandate, I decided that I want to be in the marketplace to shine for God!
But I believe that everything happens according to God's timing and schedule. The passion for full-time ministry has restored bit by bit in my heart. :)
My greatest desire is still to be a pastor someday. I dun know when will that be. But I think, it should, will still come to pass. Provided I don't let my heart to "die" on the inside of me..
For now, Ah Wen will go before me. Haha. The younger will always do greater works than the "older" ones the Bible says! Haha.... 加 油 文 文!!! You can do it! :D
It's 5.20am!! I wanted to sleep at 2am actually but can't get to sleep!... So got up at 3am and then decided to write this blog! It's been a while since I last wrote sooooooo long. Haha... But, I'm glad I did so today. :)
School's getting busier and busier! Accounting test coming up on Tues, I hope I can do very well!! Then will be assignments after assignments after assignments!! I really miss Singapore, I miss family, I miss church, I miss all the people back home!!!
I am counting down to..... Dec 1st!! :D

Direct and no more transit... Haha.... YEAH!!
